Two & Three Product Mass Balance Calculator

Metallurgical mass balance from assays: yields, recoveries, ratio of concentration and enrichment ratio with the classical two-product and three-product formulas.

Methodology & references

The two-product formula solves the classical metallurgical balance for a feed separated into concentrate and tailings from three assays: yield Y = (f − t)/(c − t), recovery R = Y·c/f·100, ratio of concentration 1/Y and enrichment ratio c/f. It assumes steady state, no losses outside the two products, and assays consistent enough that c > f > t.

The three-product formula extends this to two concentrates using two assayed elements: two simultaneous balances solved by 2×2 Cramer’s rule, yielding the mass split to each concentrate and per-metal recoveries. When the two assays are not independent enough to separate the products (a near-singular system), the calculator reports the problem instead of returning meaningless yields.
